For example, did you know that our birth center now offers nitrous oxide for labor, surgical repairs and IUD placements? This is a common treatment offering in many countries, but is fairly new in the United States. Nitrous (also commonly known as “laughing gas”) is a colorless, odorless gas which reduces anxiety and creates a heightened sense of well-being when inhaled.
The method of delivery of Nitrous is different than at the dentist’s office; it’s also mixed differently. It’s completely self-directed: the patient holds her own mask when she wants the Nitrous, takes a few deep breaths, exhales back into the mask, and then drops the mask until she feels she needs it again.
We are so excited to offer this new treatment option to help women in labor, and in other situations where discomfort is common.
